Cisco’s acquisition of Viptela in 2017 made waves; not only because Cisco already had two SD-WAN technology acquisitions under its belt, but because it gave Cisco yet another edge in the SD-WAN market. Viptela, along with Cisco’s other SD-WAN technologies, provides extended offerings for midmarket and enterprise customers expanding into global communications.
Cisco’s David Goeckeler, executive VP and general manager of networking and security said the following in an interview with Network World in June 2018.
“The branch is a very complicated part of the network when you think about it because when you think about a global business where you’ve got all the different types of interconnect you have around the world and you’re trying to manage all that. That part of the network is going to a software-defined WAN, and it’s an area we’ve been investing in heavily.”
Cisco DNA Center And SD-WAN
The plan, of course, is to deeply integrate the Viptela technology into Cisco’s Digital Network Architecture (DNA) Center, an open intent-based networking platform that increases connectivity. Once integrated, clients can deploy Cisco SD-WAN in practically one step.
A recent IDG study found that 30% of organizations consider network outages to be a leading WAN concern, citing lack of visibility and analytics for network management. As such, Cisco released SD-WAN vAnalytics, which is a cloud-based SaaS application. It gathers intelligence and metrics, enabling customers better visibility and management of their network infrastructure.
Cisco is now partway through its phased integration of Viptela and other SD-WAN technologies to create an end-to-end SD-WAN solution with the Cisco DNA Center.
- Phase 1: Cisco will continue to support and invest in the Viptela SD-WAN solution, including the Viptela vEdge routers.
- Phase 2: Viptela features will be incorporated into existing Cisco enterprise routing platforms.
- Phase 3: Viptela’s cloud management platform will be integrated with Cisco DNA Center.
