Data Backups as a Foundation for Disaster Recovery
In the video, Wankovsky brings up an important point. He mentioned that reliable data backups are merely the foundation for disaster recovery and not a disaster recovery plan in-and-of-itself. This ties into a misconception about the role of disaster recovery in the organization.
When a disaster strikes, data backups will be absolutely critical to your response, but they are only part of the story. A disaster recovery plan looks at the entire experience of a disaster, which includes the event, the aftermath, and the restoration of IT systems.
A reliable disaster recovery plan is a documented process which explains a number of factors. It describes which IT personnel will perform what functions in the response. It prioritizes the business’s IT applications, so the team can restore the most important functions first. It even includes a communication strategy to inform the company and the public of the situation.
Furthermore, a disaster recovery plan needs to be structured around budgetary means. It is entirely possible to design a plan that can restore all IT systems in a remote location or the cloud almost immediately, but that is not going to be the most cost effective decision for most businesses. Disaster recovery involves asking the hard questions of what the business truly needs to survive a disaster.
Finally, one of the most crucial components of a disaster recovery strategy is testing. By definition, these plans are only to be used in critical, high-pressure situations. There is no time for the team to learn on the fly, and there will be harsh consequences if the plan does not work as intended. Every minute counts, so it is vital that the plan is tested multiple times and tested again for good measure.
